Warrington was historically part of Lancashire and the Romans developed the town of Warrington, as it was an important place for crossing the River Mersey. However a more up to date town was developed by the Saxons and during the Middle Ages Warrington became a market town. The town was traditionally known for its textile industries and the tool productions.
The Warrington borough is surrounded by places such as Macclesfield, Vale Royal and Halton that are all within the Cheshire County. Boroughs such as Wigan, St Helens, Salford and Trafford also surround Warrington borough.
The borough of Warrington has a population of about three hundred and nineteen thousand seven hundred and eighty two. About forty nine per cent of the population are male and about fifty one per cent of the population are females. The average age for the population is about thirty-eight years of age and this is slightly below both the national and regional averages. Most of the population within the town are ethnic whites however there is also a small number of minorities and mixed races.
