Scarborough is located in North Yorkshire. It is the largest town in North Yorkshire and is home to about 60,000 residents. Scarborough is well known as a resort town that has maintained much of its Victorian feel. The local mineral spa has done much for helping Scarborough to stand out among the many other resort towns. Visitors will find many luxury hotels situated in Scarborough as well as numerous other more economical accommodations. There are also many shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes to enjoy when not lounging on the sandy beaches. Scarborough Castle is also a popular tourist attraction.
Scarborough is a seaside resort on the North Sea in the county of North Yorkshire. It is said to be the largest seaside resort in Yorkshire. The town is overlooked by Scarborough Castle, which was originally built in the twelfth century and is on a headland some three hundred feet above the sea. .
Scarborough Fair was founded in 1253 when it was granted a royal charter and was held annually for about 500 years. Today, it is remembered in the song of the same name.
In 1626 Scarborough became a spa town when Elizabeth Farrow discovered the town's spa waters. As with many other British spas, these waters were thought to provide health benefits and they attracted a great number of visitors to the town.
The town still has a fishing industry and you can visit the harbour market if you want to sample freshly caught local fish.
The long sandy beaches mean that Scarborough is still a popular seaside holiday resort. It is also popular in the quieter winter months when it is used as a spot for relaxation. As well as the long beaches, the town is also home to a Sea Life and Marine Sanctuary which is home to thousands of sea creatures as well as serving as a base to look after orphaned and injured seal pups. More recently it has also become an otter sanctuary as well as a convalescence home for sea turtles.
The grave of the author Anne Bronte is located in Scarborough in St Mary's churchyard beneath the castle. Other famous people from the town include the playwright Alan Ayckbourn and the television personality Sir Jimmy Savile who was granted the honour of being a Freeman of the town.
