The city of Glasgow is located in Scotland and is the largest city in Scotland. In the immediate area there are about 2 million people living in and around Glasgow. Glasgow is a historical city but has also taken steps to become a modern city as well. The city is widely considered to offer the best shopping in the UK, with the exception of London and is also home to many museums and parks. Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland with over 600,000 people living here. The city has many things to see and do and was recently designated a European City of Culture. The city even boasts having its own Poet Laureate.
Glasgow is home to a number of different festivals which are spread throughout the year. These include the Comedy Festival, which takes place during March and January's Celtic Connections, which features concerts, talks and ceilidhs amongst other events. This festival regularly attracts over 100,000 visitors from all over the world, so be sure to book your hotel room in plenty of time if you are visiting Glasgow whilst this festival is being held.
In August, the city holds the annual World Pipe Band Championship where pipe bands from across the globe compete for the highly coveted awards. If you want to witness the ultimate bagpipe experience, this is probably as close as you will get!
Glasgow has a major sporting tradition and was home to the first ever international football match, which was played between Scotland and England in the city in 1872. More recently, the UEFA cup finals have been held here. The city is also home to rugby union and rugby league teams and will host the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
Glasgow city centre is easy to get around and is based on a "grid" system. Shoppers are well catered for and will head towards the major shopping centres at Buchanan Galleries and also the St Enoch Centre. There is also a good selection of museums and art galleries to keep you occupied during your visit to Glasgow.
