The city has done an admirable job of maintaining its ties to history while also welcoming modern conveniences as well. The university dates back to the 13th century when it was founded by monks. While Cambridge is perhaps best known for the university, there is also many other sites to see including numerous gardens, parks, museums and galleries. There are also festivals held periodically during the year. Rowing is also popular in Cambridge and there are regattas held all during the year on the river.
Cambridge is the county town of Cambridgeshire and is home to the famous university, which is one of the top five universities in the world. You won't be able to miss the university buildings, including King's College Chapel and the University Library, as you wander around the city. Including students, the city of Cambridge is home to almost 110,000 people.
The area occupied by the city has been used by humans for at least 3,500 years and has been important since Roman times. The university itself dates back to 1209 AD and the oldest college in the city (Peterhouse) has been in existence since 1284. Unusually for a British city, Cambridge does not have a cathedral.
The city of Cambridge is a popular destination all year round but you will need to book your accommodation well in advance if you intend to visit during one of the many festivals that the city is home to. These include the Midsummer Fair, which is one of the oldest fairs in the country as well as the Folk Festival, Strawberry Fair and the Film Festival.
Cambridge caters well for shoppers and has been described by some as a shopper's paradise. As well as the major stores, there are a thriving number of local boutiques and shops. There are also two major shopping centres together with a number of markets that are held at various venues in the city. There is also a wide choice of pubs, bars and restaurants so that you'll be well catered for during your visit to Cambridge.
If you get a sense of deja vu when you visit Cambridge, that's not surprising as the city has been used as a backdrop for a multitude of films as well as being described in books by authors through the ages. Musically, the town has been the birthplace of bands such as Pink Floyd.
