Rye is a small town on the south coast of England in East Sussex. It is a popular tourist destination and can trace its roots back to at least medieval days. In 1189 it became a member of the Cinque Ports, which were important for both military and trade reasons as they were located at the narrowest part of the English Channel. Historically, Rye has always had a fishing industry and the harbour is still home to a small fishing fleet although these are now being replaced by yachts and other leisure vessels.
There is a Farmers' Market held in the town each week where you can purchase locally produced food and other items.
Rye Harbour is about two miles outside the town of Rye and is home to a Nature Reserve that was established in 1970. Some two hundred thousand people a year visit the reserve to witness the 150 rare and endangered species that it is home to.
Another attraction in the town is Lamb House, which dates back to the eighteenth century and has been home to several famous authors including E F Benson who wrote about the gardens in his series of "Mapp and Lucia" novels.
