The city of Ripon has a very strong educational network. Ripon Grammar School is a state secondary school that is coeducational and has a selective intake process. This grammar school is open to children that are aged between eleven and eighteen years of age. Ripon grammar school has about eight hundred pupils. This grammar school is claimed to date back to the Saxon times and in 1555 it was refounded during the reign of Queen Mary. The motto for Ripon Grammar School stands for the eagerness to learn and seek righteousness. This school became coeducational during the 1960's. Most of the pupils that go the school are from Ripon and only attend during the day however there are still separate boys and girls boarding houses. Some of the famous people that have attended this school include Richard Hammond the well known television presenter and David Curry MP, who was actually the head boy in 1962. The area of Ripon was actually the only place where people voted to keep a selective school when a survey was conducted in 2000. This grammar school got awarded engineering status in 2006 and this has helped the funding for the school and this in turn will improve facilities for technology and science.
