When Norman the Conqueror began his offensive onslaught in 1066 of England, so great has his name became that even to this day, the slightest relic associated with him is now worthy of mention which is a remarkable feat. In this way, many a small English hamlet and village has become worthy of note, elevating itself from the usual list of non descript little boroughs. Richmond located in North Yorkshire is home to Richmond Castle which was constructed in 1071 not only as a strategically placed military fortification but also as a means for Norman to stamp down his authority as a provocative gesture to the English rebels who had so resolutely opposed his plans at every turn.
As mentioned, Richmond Castle was created with military operations in mind and to that end, it was created with especially robust materials and to very dense specifications so as to ensure that it would be one monument built by Norman that would not topple so easily. But not even he would have been able to predict that this majestic and imposing building would remain standing almost a thousand years later.
The Castle was also further adopted for military usage during the first and second world wars, to inter prisoners of wars and conscientious objectors as well as alleged and actual spies until they could be transported to a more secure location in London. Nowadays, the only conquering that Richmond Castle endures is those few people who are able to actually climb up all of the stairs of the castle.
