Telephone House, Wentworth Street, Peterborough, PE1 1BA Show on map 7.27 miles from PeterboroughPeterborough, located in Cambridgeshire, is an historic cathedral city. The most well known sight in Peterborough is naturally the cathedral, which dates back to 665 when it was established as an abbey. The present day building was constructed in 1118 and completed in the 13th century. The cathedral has served notable purposes throughout history, including the burial of Katharine of Aragon. Visitors should be aware that accessibility may be limited during services as the cathedral does still offer services. There is also a museum and art gallery in Peterborough as well as numerous other attractions, dining and shopping venues.
Peterborough is a city of just over 160,000 people and is located in Cambridgeshire on the banks of the river Nene. Parts of the city are below sea level and the city is generally flat, giving local cyclists an easy time. It has been inhabited since at least the Bronze Age and there are the remains of a settlement from that time at the Flag Fen site towards the edge of the city. There are good transport links to and from the city and it is less than an hour's train journey from central London.
The annual Peterborough Festival takes place in the city in early summer each year and regularly attracts over one hundred thousand people to the parades and musical entertainment it provides. This means that if you intend to visit Peterborough during the festival you should book your hotel room in plenty of time.
The local football team, popularly known as The Posh, have set a number of records in football and are known for their "giant killing" defeats in several football cup games. The city also has rugby, hockey, cricket and rowing teams. The rowing club holds regattas in the spring and summer and these attract competitors from across the UK.
Peterborough Cathedral is a prominent feature of the city and is of architectural interest as its unique design has three imposing arches, a design choice that is not seen anywhere else. Just outside the city, Burghley House dates back to the sixteenth century and lies in a park that was designed by Capability Brown. The House was used as one of the locations for the movie "The Da Vinci Code". Each year, there is a three day event which is one of the six leading horse trials in the world.
