A small town located just a few miles north of Birmingham, Nuneaton nevertheless managed to make a lasting impression upon the Victorian novelist George Elliot who was touched by the tranquillity and picturesque nature of the town. A visit to Nuneaton simply would not be complete without a visit to Arbury Hall which will appeal to people who enjoy their architecture as well as history.
Arbury hall originally began its life as a monastery but this was demolished in order to make way for the successful construction of the manor house and whilst it received sharp criticism at the time of its first creation, Arbury Hall soon evolved into something far greater than the mere passing fancy of a whimsical nobleperson and quickly established itself as being the most remarkable Gothic revival project.
Not to be outdone and seeking to capitalise on their success so far, the architects involved in the construction of Arbury Hall also designed the house with such generous proportions so as to allow for the effective and proper storage of a number of different relics and antiques. Some would say that this was rather presumptuous of them, but Arbury Hall soon became renowned for its remarkable collection of relics and valuables from different historical eras. Whilst it was of museum calibre, the treasures of the manor house were kept for the exclusive enjoyment of the owner who was the only one able to bask in the glory of having such a comprehensive and thorough collection.
