79 Massetts Road, Horley, RH6 7EB Show on map 0.71 miles from HorleyHorley is located in Surrey and is easily reached from London by the Horley railway station. In recent years, Horley has become quite popular. Visitors will find a host of different hotels, eateries and shops in Horley. A must see while in town is the Archway Theatre. This is the only under the arches theatre in Britain. It is situated beneath the Victoria Road railway bridge arches. The theatre hosts an auditorium, bar and studio. The auditorium is capable of seating almost 100 guests while the studio can accommodate 40 people. 10 productions are offered annually at this theatre in Horley.
Horley a small town which is located somewhere between the half way point between the two cities of London and Brighton, is often overlooked and underestimated by tourists, who often regard it as little more than a convenient stopping off point in between the two big cities. This is hardly surprising, given that the town of Horley has a population of 20,000 where as London has a population closer to 20 million!
What Horley lacks in size, it certainly makes up for in terms of a rich and colourful as well as deeply interesting history. It is remarkable that this small town was once upon a time the major and central political and administrative centre for the whole of the Southern England district. It eventually came under the direct control of a Benedictine Abbey and in 1539 was eventually acquired by the nefarious King Henry the 8th. The acquisition of the "Manor of Horley" as it was referred to back then was a far from peaceful or amicable one, following his falling out with the Pope, Henry the 8th, once the Defender of the Faith for the Papacy made the monasteries that were scattered across the English counties his personal enemy and was quick to seize their property and assets. With his gesture of contempt thus conveyed to Rome, he then proceeded to rather callously break up the land and bequeath to loyal members of the Royal Court as reward for their commitment and obedience. Given the man's fearsome temper, as well as appetite for revenge, this was hardly a difficult task at all!
