The town of Gretna is located close to Scottish border and close to the famous area of Gretna Green. Both the town of Gretna and the area Gretna Green are very famous as wedding venues and historically this was due to the liberal marriage laws that Scotland has. The town of Gretna is located on the A74 motorway close to the mouth of the river that is known as Esk.
The town of Gretna is distinct from the smaller village of Gretna Green. The village of Gretna Green is famous for weddings as it is a separate area from the neighbouring town of Gretna.
The town of Gretna is located about five miles to the west of the village of Eastriggs and about eight miles to the west of the town of Annan. Both Annan and Eastriggs are located on the B721, which are liked to the A75 that is close by.
The name Gretna actually means the place at the gravely hill within the old English language. In the modern day language it actually means Gravelly Hill.
The town was once well known as a base for a HM Factory and this factory was known as Moorside. The factory was a very big factory for cordite munitions and the factory made use of the Solway Firth for producing the munitions. The factory supplied ammunition to the British forces during the First World War. The factory that was built within the town was actually the largest factory of its type that was ever built. The factory stretched for about nine miles and it started in the nearby village of Eastriggs and ran all the way to the village of Longtown, which is actually part of England. When the factory was built it required ten thousand navvies to construct it.
